Self-kindness enhances motivation, resilience, and consistency with health-related activities like exercise and diet, which makes it essential for weight loss. You may lessen shame and self-blame by being friendly to yourself, especially after disappointments. This will prevent you from giving up on your ambitions. Overall results are better with this more upbeat and durable attitude than with a self-critical one.
The advantage of self-kindness for weight loss
Enhances motivation and consistency: Self-compassion has been associated with improved motivation and self-esteem, as well as increased consistency with exercise and diet regimens.
Handles setbacks: Self-kindness makes it easier to bounce back from dietary lapses without giving up or becoming disheartened. Not being burdened by guilt increases your chances of getting back on track.
Minimizes bad outcomes: Research indicates that self-compassion makes it harder to lose focus on your objectives following a setback, resulting in more resilient and effective ways to deal with challenges.
Promotes a healthier mindset: A self-compassionate approach moves the emphasis from a desperate rush to a more understanding and healthy connection with food and oneself.
Lessens shame: Self-compassion is linked to reduced levels of weight self-stigma and body shame, both of which can be major obstacles to effective weight control.
How to be kind to yourself
Be your own biggest admirer by showing yourself the same compassion and support as you would a good friend.
Develop self-acceptance by accepting your existing situation without passing judgment. Accepting where you are as a beginning point for change, rather than intenesly opposing it, is what this is all about.
Rephrase your objectives: Consider your weight-loss journey a self-care activity rather than a place for self-deprecation. This viewpoint can boost self-esteem and be powerful.
Consciously choose to support and take care of yourself during difficult times by being mindful of your negative self-talk.
Think of five things you love about yourself… not to do with your personality, but choose five physical things you like about yourself.
For example, the sagging skin on the upper arms: bat wings, bingo wings, dinner lady arms… But my upper arms, lift, carry, reach, grasp, allowing me to hug and pick up children/pets retrieve and maintain different items and most importantly, they are protective, for example; shield my face from an unexpected fall.
What are your five things you physically love about yourself? These five things will support you to enhance your motivation, resilience and consistency.
